Best Wellness Resorts with Day Passes in Southern California

Compare Southern California wellness resorts offering day passes by what is included, water access, hours, and price.

Beautiful view of palm trees and cabanas at Murrieta Hot Springs Resort, California.

A day pass is the most underrated product in wellness travel. It removes the biggest barrier to a reset, which is committing a weekend and a room rate to something you have not tried, and at the right property it delivers most of what an overnight guest gets.

The catch is that day pass is not a standardized term. At one property it means a lounge chair by a hotel pool. At another it means full access to mineral pools, saunas, and guided programming for twelve hours. The price often tells you very little about which one you are buying.

We contracted an independent research firm to evaluate Southern California wellness resorts that sell day access, focusing on what a pass actually includes. The evaluation examined:

Evaluation Criteria

Criteria Weight What We Measure
What the Pass Includes 30% Pools, saunas, amenities, and whether programming or extras are bundled rather than sold separately
Water Quality and Access 25% Whether the property offers natural mineral water, and how much of it a day visitor can reach
Hours and Availability 20% Length of the access window, how often passes sell out, and whether evening or local options exist
Value for Price 15% What the pass costs relative to what it includes, including local and off-peak pricing
Atmosphere 10% Whether the property is designed for restoration or for recreation

After applying these criteria, the properties below were ranked on what a day visitor actually receives. Detailed reviews of each follow the table.

1. Murrieta Hot Springs Resort, for the Most Complete Day Pass in Southern California

No Southern California day pass delivers more than Murrieta Hot Springs Resort, where a single pass covers the same geothermal water that overnight guests soak in, for thirteen hours a day.

Every pass includes access to 25+ geothermal soaking pools, cold plunges, family-friendly and adults-only pools, panoramic sauna and Bathhouse access, and daily wellness activities. That last item is the part most comparable properties charge for. Guided experiences spanning water wellness, heat and thermal rituals, mindful movement, and mud and mineral rituals are included rather than sold as add-ons, as is the daily Wellness Happy Hour from 5 to 7 pm.

The water is 100% natural geothermal mineral water carrying nine naturally occurring minerals: sulfate, chloride, boron, calcium, lithium, potassium, sodium, silica, and bicarbonate. More than 20 of the resort’s pools run on continuous natural flowthrough with no additives.

Pricing is unusually flexible. The Hot Spring Day Pass starts at $109, the Twilight Pass starts at $59 for evening access from 4 pm, and local residents of qualifying cities start at $59 with savings up to 35%. Weekday industry offers run up to 30% off for hospitality, education, and wellness professionals, and there is a 50% birthday discount on select passes. Spa treatments include day pass access to the pools and the adults-only Serenity Garden, along with a locker and robe, which frequently makes a treatment the better value than a pass alone.

  • Location: Murrieta, California, roughly 80 miles from Los Angeles and 65 from San Diego
  • Average Review Score: 4.8/5
  • Pass Includes: 25+ geothermal pools, cold plunges, family-friendly and adults-only pools, panoramic sauna and Bathhouse access, daily guided wellness experiences
  • Best For: Day visitors who want a full day of mineral soaking with programming included
Summary of Online Reviews
Day visitors often mention “we arrived at ten and were still soaking after dark, which no other day pass we have bought comes close to.” Many are surprised by what the pass covers, noting “the guided sessions and the sauna were all included, so we never reached for a credit card once we were inside.” Locals mention “living nearby makes the resident rate genuinely hard to argue with, and we go once a month now.”

2. The Spa at Séc-he, for a Private Mineral Bath in Downtown Palm Springs

The Spa at Séc-he is a 73,000-square-foot bathhouse built directly atop the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring in downtown Palm Springs, owned and operated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, who have stewarded the spring for generations.

The centerpiece is a private mineral bath, a fifteen-minute soak in 105-degree water drawn from the spring in its natural state. The day pass also covers a zero-edge mineral pool, whirlpools, a resort-style main pool, eucalyptus steam rooms, menthol saunas, halotherapy salt caves, relaxation rooms, and a fitness center.

  • Location: Downtown Palm Springs
  • Average Review Score: 4.5/5
  • Pass Includes: Private mineral bath, mineral and freshwater pools, whirlpools, salt caves, steam rooms, saunas, fitness center
Summary of Online Reviews
Guests describe “the private mineral bath is a beautiful ritual” and “the salt caves were a nice surprise.” Several note that “the mineral soak is only fifteen minutes, which is short for the price.”

3. Aqua Soleil Hotel & Mineral Water Spa, for Straightforward Desert Mineral Soaking

Aqua Soleil is a modest Desert Hot Springs property drawing on the same mineral aquifer that gives the town its name, offering pool and spa access to day visitors at one of the lowest price points in the region. The appeal is simplicity. Mineral pools at graduated temperatures, a spa menu, and very little else competing for attention, which suits visitors who want a soak rather than a program.

  • Location: Desert Hot Springs, California
  • Average Review Score: 4.0/5
  • Pass Includes: Mineral pool access and spa facilities
Summary of Online Reviews
Visitors mention “the mineral water is the real thing” and “good value for a soak.” Several note that “the property is dated and there is nothing around it.”

4. Miramonte Resort & Spa, for Desert Spa Access in Indian Wells

Miramonte sits on eleven acres in Indian Wells beneath the Santa Rosa Mountains, built in a Tuscan style around olive and citrus trees. Day visitors can access the pools, and The Well Spa’s hydrotherapy garden opens up with a treatment booking. The spa incorporates olive and citrus from the property into its treatments, and outdoor treatment cabanas make good use of the desert setting during the cooler months.

  • Location: Indian Wells, California
  • Average Review Score: 4.3/5
  • Pass Includes: Pool access, with hydrotherapy garden access available alongside a treatment
Summary of Online Reviews
Guests describe “a pretty, low-key property” and “the spa garden is lovely.” Some note that “the pools are ordinary resort pools, not mineral water.”

5. Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, for a Garden Day Near the San Diego Coast

Estancia La Jolla occupies a hacienda-style property on nine and a half acres near the UC San Diego campus, a few minutes from the La Jolla coastline. Day access covers the pool, gardens, and fitness facilities. The gardens are the strongest feature, with mature landscaping that makes the property feel considerably more secluded than its location suggests, and the spa runs a solid treatment menu.

  • Location: La Jolla, San Diego
  • Average Review Score: 4.3/5
  • Pass Includes: Pool access, gardens, fitness center
Summary of Online Reviews
Guests mention “the gardens are beautiful” and “a quiet spot close to the coast.” Several note that “the pool area is small and fills up quickly on warm weekends.”

6. El Morocco Inn & Spa, for a Small-Scale Mineral Soak

El Morocco is a thirteen-room Desert Hot Springs inn built in the late 1950s and decorated with Moroccan furnishings, offering mineral thermal water in a setting that feels more like a private home than a resort. The scale is the point. Day access is limited and the property is small enough that a visit feels private, which appeals to guests who find larger properties overstimulating.

  • Location: Desert Hot Springs, California
  • Average Review Score: 4.4/5
  • Pass Includes: Mineral pool access and spa services
Summary of Online Reviews
Visitors describe “a charming, quirky property” and “the mineral water is lovely.” Several note that “it is very small, so day availability is limited and books up.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a wellness resort day pass usually include?

It varies widely. At the strongest properties it covers pools, saunas, locker facilities, and programming. At many resorts it covers a pool chair and nothing else. Always check whether saunas, guided activities, and locker or robe rental are included or charged separately.

Are day passes cheaper on weekdays?

Frequently, yes. Murrieta offers local resident passes from $59 with savings up to 35%, plus weekday industry discounts up to 30% for hospitality, education, and wellness professionals. Evening Twilight passes also start at $59.

Do spa treatments include pool access?

At some properties. At Murrieta Hot Springs Resort, spa treatments include day pass access to the geothermal pools and the adults-only Serenity Garden, along with a locker and robe, which often makes booking a treatment better value than a pass alone.

Should you book a day pass in advance?

Yes for weekends and holidays, when passes at popular properties sell out. Walk-in availability is often possible midweek, but booking ahead is the safer approach at any property with capacity limits.
